Meta is cutting 8,000 jobs, Snap is cutting 1,000 — both cite AI progress as the reason. The headlines sound like crisis. For German SMBs, they're an invitation: whoever defines today which tasks AI should take over doesn't replace people — they give them back the time that counts.
What exactly happened ▲
On May 20, 2026, Meta sent out its first termination emails — at 4 a.m. local time in the Singapore hub, before the news reached the US and Europe. Around 8,000 jobs are being eliminated, roughly 10% of the global workforce. It's the largest round of layoffs since the "Year of Efficiency" in 2022–2023, when Meta cut 21,000 positions in total (Yahoo Finance, Quartz).
A month earlier, on April 15, Snap had followed suit: 1,000 employees plus roughly 300 unfilled positions — together, 16% of the workforce. CEO Evan Spiegel attributed the move to "rapid advancements in artificial intelligence" and said AI already generates more than 65% of new code at Snap (CNBC, Variety). Snap expects annual savings of more than $500 million starting in the second half of 2026 (CNBC).
What often gets lost in the headlines: Meta isn't just laying people off — the company is simultaneously moving up to 7,000 employees into newly created AI teams like "Applied AI Engineering" and "Agent Transformation Accelerator." It's not a reset button. It's a redistribution of tasks (Gulf Business).
Why the 2026 wave is structurally different ▲
The 2023 and 2024 layoff waves were a correction: companies had overhired during the pandemic. In 2026 the pattern is different. Companies are deliberately replacing tasks with AI systems — not because they grew too large, but because the technology has become mature enough.
The numbers confirm the trend: by mid-June 2026, the Skillsyncer tracker recorded 183,966 affected employees across 247 layoff events — 33% more than in the same period a year earlier. 20.4% of these layoffs are explicitly attributed to AI or automation — in 2025, that share was under 8% (tech-insider.org, Skillsyncer).
Amazon has cut around 30,000 jobs since October 2025. Microsoft is offering, for the first time in 51 years, a voluntary severance program for an estimated 5–10% of its workforce (Fast Company). This isn't a single Silicon Valley problem. It's a structural shift.
What does this mean for the DACH region? ▲
Germany is not a bystander. As part of its restructuring program, SAP is cutting around 10,000 jobs worldwide — about 3,500 of them in Germany, at a cost of €3 billion. Going forward, SAP plans an annual workforce reduction of 1–2% (t3n, Handelsblatt). Bosch is cutting 22,000 jobs in its supplier division — while simultaneously investing in a new robotics subsidiary and an AI center in China (Maschinenmarkt). Siemens is cutting around 6,000 jobs worldwide, nearly half of them in Germany (Netzwoche).
And the broader SMB sector? According to a recent DGB survey, more than 37% of German industrial companies are planning AI-driven job cuts. Unlike earlier waves, this one is hitting experts and specialists — in IT, administration, and diagnostics (DGB special report on AI, stellenmarkt.de).
40% of enterprise apps with AI agents — and many still fail ▲
Gartner forecasts that by the end of 2026, around 40% of all enterprise applications will feature task-specific AI agents — at the start of 2025 that figure was under 5% (Gartner, 08/26/2025).
At the same time, Gartner warns that more than 40% of all agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 (original forecast 06/25/2025, confirmed in the first Hype Cycle for Agentic AI dated 04/02/2026). The main reason: companies implement AI without first defining exactly which tasks it's meant to take over.
Additional data points from the Gartner Hype Cycle for Agentic AI (04/02/2026): Only 17% of organizations have deployed agents, but more than 60% plan to within the next 24 months. The gap between plan and execution is the central risk.
Governance gap: According to Deloitte's "State of AI in the Enterprise 2026" (published Q1 2026, n=1,854 and 3,235 leaders respectively), only 21% of companies have mature governance models for agentic AI. 66% achieve efficiency gains, but only 20% achieve revenue growth — the gap between adoption and value creation remains large.
The TÜV further-training study 2026 underscores this: only 27% of German companies have already trained employees on AI. In 2024 that figure was 12% — the share has doubled, but still falls well short of what the pace of adoption demands (TÜV-Verband, Haufe Personal).
The gap is clear: adoption without guidance fails.
What can SMBs do right now, concretely? ▲
Meta is moving 7,000 task-buckets into AI teams. In the SMB sector, these bucket definitions are often still missing — and that's exactly where the opportunity lies.
A job isn't made up of a single task. It's made up of 20 to 50 tasks a day. AI takes individual tasks out of the bucket — not the whole bucket. The question isn't "will AI replace my employees?" It's: "which of the 50 daily tasks on my service team can be qualified by an AI agent, so people get time back for the tasks only they can do?"
One concrete example: 89% of German consumers pick up the phone when they have a problem with a product or service (BITKOM). First contact decides everything. An AI phone agent like Ben from Amazing Agents qualifies the call — recognizes the issue, checks urgency, routes it to the right person. The advising stays with the human.
Whether it's a trades business with 18 employees or a financial advisory firm with three advisors — the starting point isn't a strategy paper. It's opening your own bucket and identifying three tasks an agent can take over today.
We qualify. You advise.
The layoffs show that US tech companies are deliberately replacing tasks with AI systems in 2026 — not from overheating, but structurally. The lesson for SMBs: whoever defines today which tasks AI takes over doesn't lose employees — they gain capacity.
According to the TÜV further-training study 2026, 27% of companies have trained employees on AI — double the 2024 figure (12%), but still well below what the pace of adoption demands.
At Amazing Agents, we work with the bucket-of-tasks approach: a job consists of 20 to 50 individual tasks per day. AI doesn't replace the job — it takes over individual tasks from the bucket, such as call qualification, appointment coordination, or document pre-screening. Humans keep the tasks that require judgment, empathy, and advising.
Gartner stands by its forecast that more than 40% of all agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 (original forecast 06/25/2025, confirmed in the first Hype Cycle for Agentic AI dated 04/02/2026). The most common reason: companies implement AI without first defining concrete tasks. Additional data points from the Hype Cycle: only 17% of organizations have deployed agents, more than 60% plan to within the next 24 months. Deloitte 2026 shows: only 21% have mature governance models for agentic AI.
Identify three recurring tasks that cost time today and require little judgment. An AI phone agent can take over these tasks from day one — and give your team time back for what counts.
